African Masters in Machine Intelligence (AMMI) Scholarship
In 2024, I received a fully funded scholarship to join the African Master’s in Machine Intelligence (AMMI) at AIMS Senegal. It covered tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. There were 15 of us in the cohort, from Cameroon, Ghana, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Sudan, Togo, Benin, and DR Congo.
I came from mathematics, and at some point I got curious about what machine learning was really doing under the hood. AMMI seemed like a good place to find out. The courses were taught by researchers from universities and industry. I took Computer Vision with Laurens van der Maaten and Kernel Methods with Jean-Philippe Vert, among others. Coming from pure maths, I had to unlearn a few habits and look at problems differently. I’m still learning, and honestly, that has been my favourite part.
In the first photo, I’m the first on the right. In the second, we’re saying goodbye to Dr Tondji at Safari Beach Restaurant. He’s at the back with the hat, and I’m the one in the Nike hoodie.
